The unanimous vote took place at the full Rugby Borough Council meeting in the council’s chambers - the first time since the pandemic struck.

The new mayor chose Rugby Food Bank for her charity and said her theme for the year would be integrating the town and rural communities of the borough.

On choosing a charity, Cllr Watson-Merret said: “There are many deserving charities and it’s not been an easy choice. I make my charity this year Rugby Food Bank.

“When people of Rugby and the surrounding villages are making difficult decisions between heating or eating, and recently the empty shelves at Rugby Foodbank were making headlines, then I know that it’s time to do more.”

She went on to describe how she had been inspired by the Seva community group.
