A month to go until Cawston scarecrow festival
Are there any Wurzel Gummidges out there? Not just for Cawston residents to enter - all creations welcome
There’s just a month left to enter the annual Cawston scarecrow festival.

This year’s straw fiesta runs from 17th to 20th June. It’s organised by the Cawston Grange WI, who hope the estate will be lined with a parade of scarecrows made by residents.
Suzanne Polton, Cawston Grange WI President, said: “It’s for people to have fun, to just enjoy being out.
“It’s for anyone in Cawston to take part. And if someone outside the estate wants to enter I am sure we will find a garden to put the entries in.”
The festival is free to enter and straw is available for a small donation. During the festival there will be a map of all the scarecrows so people can walk the streets and vote for their favourite creation.
Mrs Polton also plans to supply refreshments on the Saturday and Sunday from her garage.
Any money raised will be given to the Air Ambulance and Guide Dogs.
So far there are half a dozen entries, including her own.
“Mine will have to be themed on the Guide Dogs, although I haven’t thought of the title yet. I have to do something with a dog in it.”
Mrs Polton is a determined supporter of the Guide Dogs.
“The puppies are a lifeline for someone. As a WI branch we will be doing more fundraising when Covid-19 restrictions allow it.”

The first ever Cawston scarecrow festival in August 2020 raised £50 for Guide Dogs for the Blind Rugby.
Update: The comments from Mrs Polton were amended on 17/05/2021.
